Twenty-four arrive a minute, the search line clears nine

Quarter to nine at night, before a concert. Under the canopy there are three walk-through detectors and two search tables, with staff in yellow hi-vis opening rucksacks. In front of them, the queue no longer fits on the forecourt: it doubles back on itself, stretches off to the right, and its last stretch has ended up nine metres from the kerb, with cars going past on the road. More people join the queue than the search line manages to clear. IRIS measures both, and the gap between them.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • search queue, growing
  • walk-through detectors and search tables
  • search point staff
  • back of the queue
  • road open to traffic

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 410People in the queue
  • 24 / minPeople joining the queue per minute
  • 9 / minPeople cleared by the search point per minute
  • 31 min+12 minWait for the last person in line
  • 9 mDistance from the back of the queue to the kerb
  • 20:48Time of the alert

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

the search queue grows for more than five minutes in a row and its back end is within ten metres of the road

Then

  1. alert the head of security with the gate, the number waiting and the rate in and out
  2. save the video from the minute the queue started growing
  3. leave the alert in the event report with the image of the queue and the time
The instruction that set it up«Tell me when more people join the search queue than come out through the detectors, and when the back of the line gets close to the road.»

What changes

What changes for whoever runs security at the venue

It is not that there is a queue: anyone can see that. It is that the queue is growing faster than the search line clears it, and at that rate the back of the line reaches the road. The head of security then has two problems at once: a search point that cannot cope, and members of the public standing in the street. With the figure updated by the minute he can open another table, send two more staff or divert arrivals to another gate, while doing so still makes a difference.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS look at what people are carrying in their bags?

No. IRIS does not look inside bags and it replaces neither the walk-through detector nor the person doing the search. What it measures is flow: how many people join the queue, how many finish it, how long the last one waits and how much room the line has left before it reaches the street. The search is done by the staff at the control point; IRIS tells them whether they are coping or falling behind.

Can IRIS tell that the queue is going to reach the street?

No, and it does not claim to. IRIS does not predict. What it does is measure three things it can actually count: how many people join the queue per minute, how many finish it, and how many metres are left between the back of the line and the kerb. If the first number is bigger than the second, that distance shrinks, and it can be seen while it is happening. What comes next is judged by the head of security, not by the camera.

Is it any use knowing this if the search point is already at full stretch?

Yes, because it is almost never all at full stretch at the same time. With the figure in front of you, you open one more table, bring staff over from another gate that has room to spare, or divert arrivals before they join the queue. And for the next event you are left with the figure for how many people per minute each table really clears, which is what it takes to plan the operation with numbers instead of from memory.

A different case every time

Everything comes in. Only what matters gets through.

This sums up what IRIS does with one alert, from the moment it appears until it is closed. The real screen holds far more; this is the main thread.

And the best part

You decide the rule onceand it is applied the same way every time.

At three in the morning it means what it means at noon, on camera one and on camera four thousand. It does not depend on who is on shift, or how tired they are.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
