The clear width of an exit is a certified figure in the venue’s evacuation drawings, and a merchandise stand set up this morning eats into it without anyone writing it down anywhere. IRIS measures the width actually left free, not the width on the plan, and raises the alert as soon as it drops below the written minimum. The head of security finds out today, with the picture and the time, instead of on inspection day.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS really measure the width left clear at an exit?
Yes, against the physical reference of the corridor itself. When the camera is installed, the real width between the two walls is marked once, and from then on it measures how much stays clear when something appears in the way. What it gives is a measurement taken on the image, good enough to raise the alert today. The official check is still done by whoever has to do it, with their signed report.
What if what narrows the walkway is a group of people standing still?
It sees that too. For the camera it is the same thing: a trolley, a barrier or twelve people standing and talking take up the same space. The difference is set by the rule the venue writes, which can ask for an alert only if the narrowing lasts more than two minutes, so it does not fire every time somebody stops to tie a shoelace.
Does this replace the evacuation inspection?
No. The inspection is the inspection, with its report and its signature. What IRIS adds is what nobody has today: knowing what that corridor looked like on an ordinary Tuesday at six in the evening, with no inspector standing there. It is continuous watch over a safety condition, not a certificate.
