Half an hour before the doors open, in front of one of the stand gates. People have converged into a compact block that fills half the forecourt and narrows towards the opening of the gate. Twenty paces away, on the left, the forecourt is practically empty: you can see the ground between one person and the next. Three staff in hi-vis have been left on the edge of the block, outside it. In the middle there is no longer any gap between one person and the next, and the block has not moved for three minutes.

What changes for whoever runs security at the venue
What hurts in a crowd is not how many people there are: it is how many there are per square metre and whether they are moving. The first warning sign is that people stop moving forward. IRIS counts the people inside the drawn area and measures how fast the whole mass is shifting: both figures are counted, not estimated. With that, the head of security sees the problem before it shows up on a screen. Opening another gate, holding back the flow or sending staff is his decision.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS predict a crowd crush?
No. IRIS predicts nothing. It states two things it has counted: how many people there are per square metre in a specific area and how fast they are moving. When the first figure rises and the second falls, it raises an alert and shows since when. What that means in that venue, with that crowd and at that hour, is interpreted by the head of security. The camera supplies the figure and the video; the judgement belongs to a person.
Does IRIS close an entrance when density rises?
No. IRIS does not act: it does not open, it does not close and it sends nobody anywhere. Opening another gate or cutting off the incoming flow are decisions with knock-on effects, and they are taken by whoever answers for the venue. What changes is when they are taken: with density and speed updated by the minute, they are taken with figures and with time to spare, not once the problem is visible from the window.
Where does the figure of people per square metre come from?
From counting. An area is drawn onto the image, it is told how many square metres it covers on the real ground, and IRIS counts how many people are inside it. It is not an estimate: it is a division. And that is where it matters: counting people is the only measurement we hold approval for from the Spanish Metrology Centre, and it is NeuralPax that does it, a separate licence built into IRIS. If a figure is going to justify closing a gate, it had better be an approved one. We don't claim accuracy: we certify it.
