the search line grows for more than five minutes in a row and its back end is within thirty feet of the road

Then

  1. alert the head of security with the gate, the number waiting and the rate in and out
  2. save the video from the minute the line started growing
  3. leave the alert in the event report with the image of the line and the time

What changes

What changes for whoever runs security at the venue

It isn’t that there’s a queue: anyone can see that. It’s that the queue is growing faster than the search line clears it, and at that rate the back of the line reaches the road. The head of security then has two problems at once: a search point that can’t cope, and members of the public standing in the street. With the figure updated by the minute he can open another table, send two more staff or divert arrivals to another gate, while doing so still makes a difference.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS look at what people are carrying in their bags?

No. IRIS doesn’t look inside bags and it replaces neither the walk-through detector nor the person doing the search. What it measures is flow: how many people join the queue, how many finish it, how long the last one waits and how much room the line has left before it reaches the street. The search is done by the staff at the control point; IRIS tells them whether they’re coping or falling behind.

Can IRIS tell that the line is going to reach the street?

No, and it doesn’t claim to. IRIS doesn’t predict. What it does is measure three things it can actually count: how many people join the queue per minute, how many finish it, and how many feet are left between the back of the line and the curb. If the first number is bigger than the second, that distance shrinks, and it can be seen while it’s happening. What comes next is judged by the head of security, not by the camera.

Is it any use knowing this if the search point is already at full stretch?

Yes, because it’s almost never all at full stretch at the same time. With the figure in front of you, you open one more table, bring staff over from another gate that has room to spare, or divert arrivals before they join line. And for the next event you’re left with the figure for how many people per minute each table really clears, which is what it takes to plan the operation with numbers instead of from memory.
