How the counting works
Counting is not something you ask for. You draw a line.
There are two lines and two areas drawn onto the image. One line on the threshold of the room: whoever crosses it inwards adds, whoever leaves subtracts, and that is the room figure for each talk. Another sits against the desk: it is crossed on being seen, so anybody who joins the queue and never crosses it has left without being accredited. And two areas painted onto the floor: the room and the coffee foyer. None of this can be asked for in words: it is drawn once and stays there, so a Tuesday figure and a Thursday figure are measured the same way. Asking is for finding; counting is for measuring, and they are not done the same way. Counting people is the only measurement we hold approval for from the Spanish Metrology Centre, and it is NeuralPax that does it, a separate licence built into IRIS. We don't claim accuracy. We certify it.

What changes
What changes for the manager and the front desk
A conference is billed for what is set up, but it is judged by what happens inside. With these figures the hotel caters for the people who are there rather than the ones who signed up, opens another accreditation post at the hour it is needed, and knows how long a break really runs. And it hands the organiser a report with numbers instead of an estimate by eye, which is what happens today. That shows up on the invoice, and in whether they come back next year.
What people usually ask
Does this figure stand up in the report handed to the organiser?
Yes. Counting people is the only measurement we hold approval for from the Spanish Metrology Centre, and it is NeuralPax that does it, a separate licence built into IRIS. That is why the figure holds up as an attendance report and as a capacity figure in front of whoever has to check it. We don't claim accuracy: we certify it. Everything else IRIS does is not covered by that approval, and we do not present it as if it were.
Does IRIS know who went into the room?
No. IRIS counts bodies crossing a line, not guests. It does not recognise faces, does not read the badge and does not match anything against the registration list: that matching is done by the registration system, and only if the organiser wants it done. What the camera gives is how many there are, where and since when.
Is the hotel's own staff measured too?
IRIS counts the people in an area, and an area holds attendees and staff alike. Knowing how many are in the foyer is what lets you open another desk when it is needed; it is not a way of knowing what each person is doing, and it does not do that. There is no time-and-attendance record, no file on anybody and no faces. And private spaces — rooms, bathrooms, changing rooms — are outside the system.
