The breakfast room is full and the queue never gets past the host stand
Half past eight in the morning, breakfast room at capacity. Two buffet islands with people helping themselves around them, nearly every table taken and a few guests standing with a plate in hand, nowhere to sit. At the host stand by the entrance a queue is held behind the rope: nobody else comes in until a table frees up. IRIS counts how many are inside, how many are waiting, how many tables free up and which areas are saturating.

How the counting works
Counting is not something you ask for. You draw a line.
There is a line drawn at the host stand: crossing it inwards means you are in the room, crossing it outwards means you are not. With one way in and one line, the number of people inside comes out exact without asking anybody anything. And there are three zones painted on the floor — the queue, the dining area and the buffet aisle — telling you how many people are in each and how long they have been there. Asking is for searching. Counting is for measuring. And they are not done the same way: a line cannot be described in a sentence, it has to be drawn, and that is what makes the figure repeatable and auditable. Counting people is the only measurement we hold approval for from the Spanish Metrology Centre, and it is NeuralPax that does it, a separate licence built into IRIS.

What changes
What changes for the manager and the front desk
Breakfast is the hour when a whole hotel jams up, and the only one that can be fixed with sittings if you have the number. Today the working figure is the room count, which is not the number of people who come down: a Sunday fills differently from a Tuesday, and differently again when there is a group. With the room’s real curve you decide when to open, how many sittings to run, how many staff the buffet needs and how many places can be sold without anyone having breakfast standing up.
What people usually ask
Is the count for the room certified?
Yes, the people count. Counting people is the only measurement we hold approval for from the Spanish Metrology Centre, and it is NeuralPax that does it, a separate licence built into IRIS. It tells you how many people are in the room at any moment, which is what whoever sets the sittings and whoever answers for capacity actually needs. Everything else IRIS does is not covered by that approval, and we do not present it as if it were.
Why isn’t the number of occupied rooms enough?
Because not everyone comes down, and they don’t come down together. A working Tuesday and a family Sunday fill the room at different hours with the same hotel full. The room count tells you how many people sleep there; the line at the host stand tells you how many have breakfast, and those are the ones you have to seat and serve.
Does IRIS know who has had breakfast and who hasn’t?
No. It counts bodies crossing a line and bodies inside a drawn zone. It does not recognise faces, it does not compare them against any list and it does not cross the figure with the booking. It knows there are ninety-six people in the room; it does not know who any of them are, and it does not need to in order to give the number.
