What changes for the manager and the front desk
It is three minutes, and today nobody has them. Reception finds out about the group when it is already standing at the desk, and by then it is too late to open another position, get the keys ready or call the second porter. With the alert from the courtyard, the group finds a desk that is ready instead of a queue. That is the difference between an arrival that goes well and forty people standing there with a suitcase in hand.

How does IRIS know this is a group and not just people arriving?
From two things the camera can see: a large vehicle stopping on the forecourt, and a number of people crossing the courtyard towards the door within the same minute. There is no need to know who they are or where they come from. The hotel writes the threshold at which it wants the alert, and below that IRIS bothers nobody.
And if the group arrives in cars rather than a coach?
It sees that too, because the rule does not depend on the coach. What triggers the alert is how many people head for the entrance in a short space of time. A coach is the most common way for that to happen, not the only one, and the alert arrives just the same.
Does IRIS follow those people inside the hotel?
No. This camera looks outdoors and stops at the door. It does not follow anyone inside, it does not recognise faces and it does not know who is who. What it delivers is a number and a time: how many people are coming and when they reach the desk. And there are places IRIS never goes into: guest rooms, bathrooms and changing rooms are out, here and in any hotel.
