What changes for whoever runs the station

A broken ticket machine calls nobody. The passenger who finds the screen dark is not going to hunt down the station supervisor: they join the queue next door, or leave without a ticket, or miss the train. It can stay like that all morning and never show up in the report, because nothing is happening to the machine that the machine itself knows how to report. No, and that is the point. IRIS does not know what is going on inside the machine: it sees through the camera that nobody is using it while the one next door has a queue, and that is enough to raise the alert. It works the same whether the machine is off, whether the screen is frozen, whether it has run out of paper or whether somebody simply taped a sign over it. The faults the machine itself cannot report are precisely the ones that take longest to find.

And in the small hours, when there is nobody in the station?

That is why the rule carries the second condition: it is not enough that nobody is using the machine, the one beside it has to have a queue at the same time. At four in the morning neither of them has a queue, so nothing fires. It is a rule written not to bother anyone when there is nothing to say.

Does IRIS know what is wrong with the machine?

No, and it must not make it up. What it says is exactly what it sees: this machine has gone twenty minutes with nobody using it while the one beside it has a queue. The diagnosis is made by the technician when he gets there. What the station gains is not an automatic diagnosis, it is finding out the same day instead of next week.
