The risk of a packed platform is not discomfort: it is the shove. Once there is no space left, the people arriving push forward and those in the front row have nowhere to step back to. The station supervisor knows this, but from his office he cannot see four platforms at once and today he finds out when he walks down to look. With IRIS he gets the alert while the platform is filling up, with the exact point where it is tightest, and there is still time to close an entrance, open the other exit or ask for an extra train.

Does IRIS count faces to know how many people there are?
No. It counts bodies, not faces: for IRIS each person is a shape taking up room on the platform, exactly like a suitcase or a trolley. It recognises nobody, compares against no database and stores no record of who went through. What it gives back is how many people there are and where they bunch up — the only thing needed by whoever has to decide whether to close an entrance.
Our platform is packed every morning at eight. Won't it be alerting non-stop?
If it were badly set up, yes — and somebody would switch it off within two days. That is why the limit is not a universal number: the station sets it per platform and per time band. The usual approach is to give the rush hour a higher limit and only alert above it, or when the density stays high after a train has left, which is the sign that something is not moving.
Does IRIS warn before the platform fills up?
IRIS does not predict: it sees what is happening. What it does do is raise the alert before it becomes a problem, because it watches the density as it climbs and not once it is already over the top. Between the moment a platform gets uncomfortable and the moment it starts pushing there are a few minutes, and those minutes are exactly what whoever has to decide gains.
