What changes for whoever runs the station
Everyone leans out a little to see if the train is coming, and at the head of the platform the train has not finished braking. The station supervisor cannot stand at that spot every six minutes, and a public-address warning that plays all day on every platform stops being heard within a week. With IRIS the announcement only plays when somebody really is past the line with a train coming in, so it means something again. And after a month that supervisor knows which head of which platform concentrates the problem — which is where the paint or the railing has to go.

Yes, and it is one of the few actions worth automating, because a recorded message saying «please stand back from the line» harms nobody if it gets it wrong. The condition is that it plays rarely: if it plays constantly, people stop hearing it and the warning turns into background noise. Any action that moves a person or holds a train is still decided by someone at the station.
