Nobody reports a row of lights going out: the passenger switches to the other side of the concourse and keeps walking. Maintenance hears about it through a complaint, and sometimes weeks later. With IRIS the technician gets, that same night, the sector and the exact time it went out, so he takes the ladder to the right place instead of walking the station looking for it. And there is a second thing worth saying: a dark area is also an area where the camera itself sees less well, so IRIS also flags that it is seeing less than usual there.

Does IRIS see in the dark?
IRIS sees what the camera sees, no more and no less. With an infrared or a thermal camera it still tells people and objects apart in very low light; with an ordinary camera in an unlit corridor it sees little — exactly as a person looking at that screen would. That is why this camera exists: a dark area is an area where all the monitoring gets worse, and it is worth knowing the same day. Promising that everything is always visible would be a lie.
Does IRIS have to be wired into the electrical panel?
No. IRIS compares what the camera sees now with what it usually sees at that same hour, and the alert comes out of that. That covers a blown fitting, a tripped breaker and a sector somebody switched off by mistake, and it requires touching no electrical work and adding not one sensor. If a lighting management system also exists, IRIS coexists with it without trouble.
Does it also flag lights left on during the day?
Yes, it is the same rule the other way round and it is set up the same way. Let us be honest about what it is worth: we are not going to put a saving percentage here, because it depends on each station's installation and we have not measured yours. What can be stated is that the data exists, with the sector and the hours, and that with it the maintenance manager can work out the cost himself.
