Vehicle on fire inside the tunnel
Inside a tunnel. A white van has stopped in the left-hand lane with flame at the front and a column of black smoke already touching the vault. The driver is standing on the carriageway beside the vehicle. A queue is forming behind, and on the left you can see the green door of an emergency exit.

The rule
You decide once. IRIS applies it always.
If
smoke or flame appears inside the bore and does not clear within seconds
Then
- alert the control room supervisor with the camera, the point in the bore and the picture
- say that there is a person out of the vehicle and which exit is nearest
- log the time and keep the video from before the smoke started
The instruction that set it up«Tell me the moment there is smoke or flame inside the tunnel, and tell me where and what is behind it.»
What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the site
A fire inside a tunnel is the most critical case a tunnel has, and for one simple reason: the smoke has nowhere to go. Inside there is no phone signal, no real hard shoulder and nobody watching, so the alert arrives when somebody manages to call. IRIS watches the whole bore continuously and alerts the control room with the camera and the location the moment smoke appears, and adds what weighs most in the decision: there is a person out of the vehicle. It does not extinguish, it does not ventilate and it does not close the tunnel: the control room supervisor decides that, and now he decides it sooner.
What people usually ask
Don't the tunnel's own sensors already detect this?
The tunnel has its detectors and they carry on doing their job; IRIS does not replace them. What the cameras add is something else: a picture of the exact spot at the exact moment. A detector says there is something; the camera says what it is, where it is, how many vehicles are behind it and whether anyone is out of their car. A control room supervisor does not decide the same way with a bare alarm as with an image.
Does IRIS call the fire brigade by itself?
No. IRIS does not act: it does not close the tunnel, it does not start fans and it does not phone anyone. It alerts the person who has to decide, with the camera and the image. Who is sent out, when the tunnel is closed and how it is ventilated is decided by the control room, which knows the tunnel and the traffic inside it.
Does IRIS identify the vehicle or the driver?
No. IRIS does not identify anyone: it does not recognise faces and it does not read number plates. It sees that a vehicle has stopped, that smoke is coming off it and that a person is standing on the carriageway. That is enough to raise the alert, and nothing else is stored.

Who is watching the cameras of a whole branch network?
13 cases: 12 raise an alert when something happens and 1 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.

How long does it take to find a hand played two hours ago?
12 cases: 9 raise an alert when something happens and 3 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
And the best part
There is a moment when you can still act.It is while it is happening, and it is short.
After that, all you can do is tell the story. IRIS speaks up at that moment — camera, time and images — and whoever is on call decides what to do with it.
