What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the site

This camera is different from the other three: it does not report an event, it reports a state. Nobody has crashed and nobody has lost anything; a stretch of tunnel has simply lost its lighting and traffic keeps driving into it. Today that gets found during the inspection round, which comes when it comes, or when somebody calls to say you cannot see a thing in there. Between the two, hours can pass in which every car goes in blind. IRIS watches the vault the same way it watches the carriageway and reports the same day, with the stretch and the time it went out. It repairs nothing: it makes the job get raised today instead of on Thursday.

What people usually ask

How does it tell an unlit stretch from an area that is darker by design?

Because what it compares is the tunnel with itself. The normal level of each stretch is learned from how that stretch looks when everything is working, and the alert fires when that particular stretch drops below its own level. A stretch that has always been darker never fires; the one that goes out does.

Is it useful for knowing how many luminaires have failed?

It gives you a count of the ones that are not lit in the stretch the camera covers, and that already orients whoever is going up to repair them. It does not replace the inspection round or the asset inventory: it tells you when the lighting went out and which stretch, which is what nobody knows today.

Does IRIS identify the vehicles entering the unlit stretch?

No. IRIS does not identify anyone: it does not recognise faces and it does not read number plates. It counts how many vehicles have entered the stretch since the lighting went out, because that number helps decide how urgent the job is. Who they are it neither knows nor stores.
