CAM-186
Person out of the car in the tunnel
A car has stopped tight against the tunnel wall, driver's door open and a warning triangle set out behind it. The driver is standing on the carriageway, already away from the car. Traffic keeps going by in the next lane, and on the wall you can see the emergency door with the extinguisher cabinet.

- emergency exit
What this camera measures
An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.
- 3 minStopped for
- 1People out of the vehicle
- 1Warning triangles set out
- 5Vehicles that have gone past
- 1Emergency exits in view
- 21:14Time of the alert
The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.
The rule
You decide once. IRIS applies it always.
If
there is a person standing on the tunnel carriageway, outside their vehicle
Then
- alert the control room supervisor with the camera, the location and which way the person is moving
- say which emergency exit is nearest to that point
- log the time and keep the video of the moment the person got out
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if somebody gets out of their car and walks on the carriageway inside the tunnel.»
What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the site
A car stopped inside a tunnel is already a problem. A car stopped with a person walking on the carriageway is one of the highest-risk situations there is: there is no real hard shoulder, whoever comes up behind does not see them until they are right there, and they have nowhere to step aside to. Inside there is no phone signal, so often they cannot even call for help. IRIS keeps the two things apart: it reports that a vehicle has stopped and it reports, separately, that a person is out of it and which way they are going. With that the control room supervisor can drop the speed on the stretch or close the lane while that person is still there, rather than afterwards.
What people usually ask
Does it tell a stopped person from a stopped vehicle?
Yes, and that is half the value of this camera. A stopped vehicle in the tunnel is one incident; a person on foot on the carriageway is another, and a more serious one. IRIS treats them separately and reports both, because you do not respond to one the way you respond to the other.
What if the person stays inside the car?
Then the alert is the stopped-vehicle one, which also fires. What changes is the urgency and what the control room supervisor is told. The system asks nobody to get out or to stay put: it only describes what is happening so the decision is taken by whoever has to take it.
Does IRIS know who the person is or whose car it is?
No. IRIS does not identify anyone: it does not recognise faces and it does not read number plates. It sees that a person is standing on the carriageway and a vehicle has stopped by the wall, and it reports that. Neither a name nor the car's registered keeper goes anywhere, because the system does not have them.

Watch what happens. Then watch what IRIS does with it.
Not a recorded video and not a drawing: it is a summary of the real tool, with a different case each time round. The whole tool does not fit in a box.

Next step
The motorway
Who watches an entire motorway?
10 cases: 8 raise an alert when something happens and 2 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
Public transport
Who watches a whole station at rush hour?
17 cases: 11 raise an alert when something happens and 6 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
And the best part
Ten cameras or four thousand:not one of them goes unwatched.
The day IRIS starts, they all start: the ten in a school or the four thousand in a whole network. And it only raises its hand when the thing you asked for happens.
Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.
We reply the same working day.
