A child crosses the road alone
The street in front of the school at going-home time. A child with a backpack is running across the middle of the road, away from the crossing, coming out from between the parked cars, and a car is approaching in that same lane with its lights on. On the far pavement, three more children are waiting. IRIS sees a small person inside the roadway and a vehicle approaching in that lane, and it raises it while it is happening.

- child in the roadway
- vehicle approaching
- children waiting on the pavement
- parked cars
- school entrance
What this camera measures
An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.
- 1Children in the roadway
- 4 sIn the roadway for
- 3Children waiting on the pavement
- 9Vehicles in the last minute
- 14+3Crossings away from the crossing here today
- 16:42Time of the alert
The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.
The rule
You decide once. IRIS applies it always.
If
a child steps into the roadway away from the crossing while there is traffic moving
Then
- alert whoever is at the gate right away, with the camera and the spot
- save the video of the crossing, with the seconds before and after
- add the crossing to the count for that spot and that time band
The instruction that set it up«Tell me when a child steps into the road away from the crossing, and keep me a count of how often it happens, at what hour and at which spot.»
What changes
What changes for the school team
There are two things here, and the second is worth more than the first. The alert is for today: whoever is at the gate looks up and goes out to get him. What changes the street is the other one. If at that same spot children cross away from the crossing fourteen times a day, always at the same hour and always through the same gap between two parked cars, that is not bad luck: it means the crossing is in the wrong place, or that two parking spaces there are two too many. Today that conversation with the council rests on the teachers' impression. With IRIS it rests on a count by day, by hour and by spot — which is what gets a crossing moved.
What people usually ask
Can IRIS stop a child from stepping into the road?
No, and promising it would be a lie. IRIS alerts: it does not stop a car, it does not close a street and it does not hold anyone back. What it achieves is that someone finds out at the time instead of afterwards, and that the school and the council know how often it happens, at what hour and at which spot. The person who decides and acts is always a person.
Does it recognise the children crossing or the cars going past?
No, neither. IRIS does not identify anyone: it does not recognise faces, it does not compare them against any database, it does not store who anyone is and it keeps no record on anyone. Nor does it read number plates: in a school that function is not switched on. The detection is 'there is a small person in the roadway and a vehicle is coming in that lane', and that is the whole of the data.
What is the count for, if the alert already arrives?
The alert solves the moment. The count solves the street. A crossing gets moved, a speed hump gets painted or someone gets posted on that corner when somebody can show that children cross badly there every day at the same hour. That is a figure per spot and per time band, and outside a school nobody had it until now. It is the difference between asking for something and showing that it is needed.

Casinos
How long does it take to find a hand played two hours ago?
12 cases: 9 raise an alert when something happens and 3 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
Shopping centres
What does a shopping centre see beyond the visitor count?
12 cases: 4 raise an alert when something happens and 8 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
And the best part
Whoever is on duty already has a job.Watching forty screens does not fit into the shift.
No shift has time to spare. IRIS watches all forty at once and brings only what needs to be seen, with its camera and its time. What happens next is that person’s call.
Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.
We reply the same working day.
