A child on the ground in the yard
A school yard mid-morning, seen from a high camera. In the middle of the court a child in a yellow shirt is lying face down, still. Around him break time carries on: a ball game in the centre, three girls talking on the right, two boys with their backs turned by the railing and the bags left on the bench. Nobody is looking his way. IRIS sees that he has not moved for a while and that nobody has come over. Why he is there, it does not know.

The rule
You decide once. IRIS applies it always.
If
a child has been on the ground longer than the school has set and still is not getting up
Then
- alert the teacher on playground duty with the camera, the spot in the yard and the video of those seconds
- say how long it has been and how many people have come over, so they know whether to cross the yard at a run
- log the time, so the school learns when and where these things happen
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if a child stays down on the ground and doesn't get up, even with a full yard and nobody noticing.»
What changes
What changes for the school team
In a yard with three hundred children and two teachers, the one who stays down is exactly the one nobody sees: everyone else keeps running and the noise covers the rest. Today the team finds out when another child comes to tell them, and that can be two minutes or ten. With IRIS the alert arrives while it is happening, with the camera and the exact spot, and all that is needed is for an adult to go and look. IRIS does not know whether the child fell, was pushed or is playing: it knows he has not moved for a while and that nobody has come over. The rest is seen by the person who gets there.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS know what happened to that child?
No, and it is not going to say. It sees one very specific thing: that somebody has been on the ground longer than the school set, and that nobody has come over. It could be a fall, a shove, a dizzy spell or a game, and it is the person who arrives who tells the difference, not the camera. That is why the alert says «go and look» and never says what happened.
Does the camera recognise the children at the school?
No. IRIS does not identify any minor: it does not recognise faces, it does not compare them against any database, it does not store who anyone is and it does not follow a child from one camera to the next. Nor can it be used to open a disciplinary report on a child. What it detects is a situation in a place — somebody is on the ground, there, for this long — and that is enough for an adult to go over.
Where is this camera installed?
In the yard, looking at the court. And where it is not: there is no camera in classrooms, toilets or changing rooms, and there will not be. These cameras watch the common areas where adults are already on duty, and they are there so that adult arrives sooner — not to reach places that adult does not enter.
See it for yourself
A new case each time. Always the same screen.
It plays by itself and shows one case from start to finish. It is a summary: the real screen has far more functions than fit in this box.
- The rule gets built
- It goes to every camera
- Published, it watches alone
- And then it fires

Airports
What does an airport see before the queue forms?
14 cases: 7 raise an alert when something happens and 7 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
Public safety
What can a camera see without pointing at anyone?
13 cases: 9 raise an alert when something happens and 4 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
And the best part
Video is late by definition:you watch it once the thing has already happened.
IRIS tells you while it is happening, with the camera, the time and what it saw. Arriving in time changes the end of almost any story, and no new cameras are needed for that.
Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.
We reply the same working day.
