With two teachers to three hundred children, what decides how a scuffle ends is not watching harder: it is how long an adult takes to get there. At ten seconds it is three kids holding on to each other and one raised voice settles it. At two minutes there is a ring of thirty around them, someone on the ground and a whole afternoon of calls to families. IRIS separates nobody and prevents nothing: it warns while it is happening, with the camera and the spot, and the person who goes and stops it is a member of the school's staff. And it keeps the video of the moment, which is what later backs up what you tell a family, instead of everyone's own version. What it does not do, today or ever: say who each child is or who started it.

Does IRIS recognise the children in the image?
No. IRIS does not identify any minor: it does not recognise faces, it does not compare them against any database, it does not store who anyone is and it keeps no record on any pupil. What it sees is rough physical contact between several people at one spot in the playground, and that is what it reports. It cannot be used to write up a child, because it does not know who the child would be.
And does it say who started it?
No, and this is not a technical limit that will lift one day: it is a decision. A camera sees a scuffle; it does not see what happened before or why. IRIS marks the situation with a single box around everyone involved, never one box per child: the alert says there is a scuffle and where, not who is doing what. Who started it is something the school works out by talking to the kids, as it always has — the difference being that now there is a video of the moment.
Where are there cameras, and where are there not?
In the playground and in the shared parts of the building: corridors, landings and stairs. In a classroom, a toilet or a changing room no camera goes up, and that is not a setting: it does not go up. On top of that, what is watched, at what times and who gets the alert is written by the school, not by IRIS. And it is worth talking it through with the whole teaching staff before anything is installed.
