The fight that draws no crowd
The side walkway between the building and the playground, mid-morning. A boy has his back to the wall; in front of him, three classmates are closing off his way out, one with an arm stretched towards him. Around them, nothing: an empty bench, a bin, the shade of a tree. Eighteen metres away, two pupils cross the walkway without turning their heads, and behind them the playground carries on with break. There is not a single adult anywhere in frame. In the picture you cannot even make out the faces, and there is no need to: IRIS sees the shape — someone against the wall and several closing off the way out — and where on the walkway it is. It does not know who any of those kids are, it does not say who is pushing and who is taking it, and it does not know what happened before.

What IRIS understands
What it recognises in this scene
- against the wall, way out closed off
- the playground, carrying on with break
What this camera measures
An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.
- 48 sGoing on for
- 0Children who have gathered round
- 18 mNearest person
- 0Adults in frame
- 11:47Time of the alert
The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.
The rule
You decide once. IRIS applies it always.
If
someone in the side walkway is up against the wall with several people closing off the way out and it holds for more than a few seconds
Then
- alert the teacher on duty with the camera and the exact spot in the walkway
- save the video of the moment, starting a few seconds before the alert
- log the time and the spot, so the school learns which corners are left with nobody watching over them
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if someone in the side walkway ends up against the wall with several others closing off the way out, even if nobody else comes near.»
What changes
What changes for the school team
A fight that draws a crowd gives itself away: the ring announces it. This one nobody finds. It happens in plain sight, twenty paces from the playground, and it carries on because nobody comes over. A child spending break with his back against a wall is intolerable, and it is worth saying it exactly that way: the behaviour is intolerable, never a child in the picture. And the problem is not that the school does not want to know; it is that today it cannot: two teachers, three hundred children and a side walkway nobody has in front of them. IRIS separates nobody and prevents nothing. It warns while it is happening, with the camera and the spot, and the person who goes and stops it works at the school. It keeps the video of the moment, which is what later backs up what you tell a family. What it does not do, today or ever: say who each child is.
What people usually ask
Will this not go off every time some kids hug or mess about?
No, not if the rule is written properly. A hug, a play-fight or a joking shove breaks up on its own in a couple of seconds and leaves nobody against the wall. What triggers the alert is a shape that holds: someone with their back to the wall and several others closing off the way out, for as long as the school decides. And because the alert goes to a person, nobody is punished by a detection: the teacher looks over, sees it was a game and closes it in five seconds.
Who gets the alert, and what happens to video of a child?
The alert goes wherever the school says: usually the teacher on duty and the deputy head, and to nobody outside the school. The video stays in the school, and who may watch it and how long it is kept is written down before anything is installed. And it is worth spelling out: IRIS does not identify any minor. It does not recognise faces, it does not compare them against any database, it does not store who anyone is and it keeps no record on any pupil. In this picture you cannot even make out the faces and the alert still fires: what is detected is the situation, not the people.
Does this not turn the playground into a watched place where children cannot be children?
The playground is already watched — by two teachers who cannot be everywhere. This is not more watching: it is watching where nobody gets to. Running, shouting, playing and arguing produce no alert at all; the only thing that does is someone who is not being let out. In a classroom, a toilet or a changing room no camera goes up, and that is not a setting: none goes up. And there is no history on any pupil: that would need face recognition, and there is none.
Simulation · how IRIS works
A camera looks. IRIS understands what it sees.
An extract of the real screen, no voice-over and hands-free. Each round poses another situation. What sits behind it is a good deal bigger than what you see.
- The rule gets built
- It goes to every camera
- Published, it watches alone
- And then it fires

Shopping centres
What does a shopping centre see beyond the visitor count?
12 cases: 4 raise an alert when something happens and 8 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
Airports
What does an airport see before the queue forms?
14 cases: 7 raise an alert when something happens and 7 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
And the best part
The cameras you bought years agostill hold up. What they were missing was not image quality.
It was someone to look. IRIS connects to the installation you already have — same equipment, same cabling — and those images go from being stored to being understood.
Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.
