How the counting works

Counting is not something you ask for. You draw a line.

There is a line drawn where the barrier stands: whatever crosses it is one counted exit. And there is a zone painted over the waiting lane, which says how many cars are stopped and since when. Crossing the two gives the figure that matters: if the zone is full and the line is not adding up, that lane is not getting cars out. The clock on the last exit per lane is what tells a normal peak from a dead machine.

an exit lane is stacking up cars and none has crossed for more than five minutes

Then

  1. alert the booth with the lane, the time and the cars counted
  2. save the video from that lane's last exit onwards
  3. add the out-of-service minutes to the day's tally for that machine

What changes

What changes for whoever runs the car park

Anyone can see there is a queue at the exit. What you cannot see is which lane, and why. A lot of cars leaving at once is not the same as a terminal where nobody has finished for twenty minutes: the first clears itself, the second needs somebody there. With the figure broken down by lane, the manager sends a person to the right place and knows, at the end of the month, how many minutes are lost at each machine.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS know the machine is broken?

It does not diagnose it: it works it out from what it sees and what it times. IRIS counts that there are cars stopped in that lane and that none has crossed the barrier for twenty minutes. That is already enough to send somebody. If the machine reports its own status, that is cross-checked and the record is complete; if it does not, the clock and the image are enough to know where to go.

Does it tell which lane the jam is in?

Yes. Each lane has its own line and its own zone, so exits per hour, queue length and out-of-service minutes come out separately. That is what turns «there is a queue at the exit» into «the left-hand lane is not getting cars out». And over a month you can see which machine causes the most trouble, which is a different conversation with the supplier.

Can a complaint be answered with this?

Yes, and with the exact time. What remains is the count of cars in the lane, the minutes it went without letting one out and the video of the stretch. There is no plate and no identity: there is a lane, a clock and an image. With that a complaint is answered in a minute instead of reviewing recordings all afternoon.
