How the counting works
Counting is not something you ask for. You draw a line.
There is a line across the entrance lane and a zone painted over the stretch where the queue forms. Whatever crosses the line is added to the entries for that hour; whatever sits inside the zone without moving is the queue. The time between a car entering the zone and crossing the line is how long it waited. The zone follows the tarmac past the crossover, so the number also says when the queue stops belonging to the car park and starts belonging to the street.

What changes
What changes for whoever runs the car park
An entry queue that spills into the street stops being the car park's problem and becomes the council's. The manager needs to know two things and usually has neither: how many cars are waiting and how long they take. With the figure broken down by time of day you can decide whether to open a second lane on Saturday, whether the terminal takes too long per car, or whether the street sign should warn people sooner.

Does this tell you why the queue formed?
Yes, and that is the value. The number says there are six cars and a five-minute wait; the video says whether the first driver is fighting with the terminal, whether the barrier failed to lift or whether there is no room inside. Three different causes, fixed three different ways. The camera supplies the figure and the image with its timestamp; a person makes the decision.
Does IRIS count motorcycles and vans too?
Yes, if it is set up that way. The line counts whatever crosses it and can split by vehicle type: car, van or motorcycle. That split matters because a motorcycle slips through right behind a car and gets lost in a system based on entries minus exits. Here what is counted is what is seen crossing, not what opens the barrier.
Can IRIS open the barrier when the queue gets long?
No. IRIS does not act: it counts, times and alerts. Lifting a barrier, opening a second lane or sending someone down to the ramp is decided by the car park under its own rules. What changes is that the decision is taken with the figure in front of you and while it is happening, instead of the next day.
