How the counting works

Counting is not something you ask for. You draw a line.

Over the rows of bays there are drawn zones, one per type. Inside each zone IRIS looks at whether a vehicle is on each bay and for how long. And there is a line across the access lane: whatever crosses it is added to the entries for that level. Neither the zone nor the line can be asked for out loud; they are drawn once over the frame and stay there, and that is why one Tuesday's number can be compared with another Tuesday's.

What changes

What changes for whoever runs the car park

A sign that gets it wrong is worse than no sign at all: it sends cars to a full level and the driver stops believing it. The error almost always comes from counting entries and exits, because every motorcycle that slips past next to a car and every barrier left up throws the tally off, and nobody squares it again until night. If the number comes from looking at the bays, the sign corrects itself on every reading.

Why does the number on a guidance sign go wrong?

Almost always because of how it is worked out. If the number comes from entries minus exits, every car that slips through uncounted and every barrier left up stays inside the tally, and the error grows through the day. Looking at the bays, every reading starts from zero again: if twelve bays have no car on them, it is twelve, even if the barrier has been out of step all morning.

Can IRIS send the number to my sign and my app?

Yes. The count comes out as a figure per level, per zone and per bay type, and from there it goes to the entrance sign, the traffic light, the app or whatever system the car park already runs. IRIS does not replace that system: it hands it a number measured by looking at the bays, and the time it was measured.

Do you need one camera per bay?

No. One camera covers a whole row or a whole face of bays, depending on the height and the angle it looks from. What is needed is that every bay is visible: a bay hidden behind a column cannot be counted by looking at it, and that is said before installing, not afterwards.
