How the counting works

Counting isn’t something you ask for. You draw a line.

Over the rows of spaces there are drawn zones, one per type. Inside each zone IRIS looks at whether a vehicle is on each space and for how long. And there’s a line across the access lane: whatever crosses it is added to the entries for that level. Neither the zone nor the line can be asked for out loud; they’re drawn once over the frame and stay there, and that’s why one Tuesday’s number can be compared with another Tuesday’s.

What changes

What changes for whoever runs the parking lot

Saturday at twelve, a driver goes up to the second level because the sign said there were twenty spaces, and up there isn’t one. By the third lap he has stopped believing the sign, and a sign that gets it wrong is worse than no sign at all. The error almost always comes from counting entries and exits: every motorcycle that slips through behind a car and every barrier left up throws the count off, and nobody squares it again until night. If the number comes from looking at the spaces, the sign corrects itself at every reading.

Why does the number on a guidance sign go wrong?

Almost always because of how it is worked out. If the number comes from entries minus exits, every car that slips through uncounted and every barrier left up stays inside the tally, and the error grows through the day. Looking at the spaces, every reading starts from zero again: if twelve spaces have no car on them, it’s twelve, even if the barrier has been out of step all morning.

Can IRIS send the number to my sign and my app?

Yes. The count comes out as a figure per level, per zone and per space type, and from there it goes to the entrance sign, the traffic light, the app or whatever system the parking lot already runs. IRIS doesn’t replace that system: it hands it a number measured by looking at the spaces, and the time it was measured.

Do you need one camera per space?

No. One camera covers a whole row or a whole face of spaces, depending on the height and the angle it looks from. What’s needed is that every space is visible: a space hidden behind a column can’t be counted by looking at it, and that’s said before installing, not afterward.
