How the counting works
Counting is not something you ask for. You draw a line.
There is a line drawn right across the aisle and a zone painted over the whole run. When a vehicle crosses the line the count starts, and every time it crosses again another lap is logged. The clock stops when the car pulls into a bay. Asking is for finding; counting is for measuring, and the two are not done the same way. A line cannot be described in a sentence: it has to be drawn over the frame, and that is why the number is repeatable and auditable.

What changes
What changes for whoever runs the car park
A driver going round in circles is a bay that is not being sold and one more car clogging the aisle. The manager usually does not have that figure: he knows how many cars come in, not how long each one takes. With the clock running you can see at what time the search blows up, on which level it happens and whether the guidance sign is sending people to a full floor. That is fixed by changing the signage, not by buying more bays.

How does IRIS follow a car if it does not read the plate?
By its image, and only inside the frame. IRIS sees a vehicle of a certain colour, shape and size and keeps track of it while it is in view of that camera or the next one. Once it leaves the frame, that is the end of it. There is no plate, no identity and nobody to follow across town: there is a stopwatch that starts on the ramp and stops in a bay.
Is the figure any use when the car park is nearly empty?
Yes, above all for comparison. With the level half empty the search is short, and that is precisely the number you compare Saturday afternoon against. A whole month of the curve shows at what time parking starts to get hard, and that decides where a sign goes, which level opens first and when the tariff should change.
Does IRIS predict when the level will fill up?
No. IRIS counts what is happening: how many cars are driving around, how long they have been searching and how many bays are free. The forecast is made by whoever runs the car park, with those numbers in front of them and the history of previous weeks. The camera supplies the measured figure and the exact time, not a prediction.
