How the counting works

Counting is not something you ask for. You draw a line.

There is a line on the upper walkway and another on the lower aisle, and a zone painted over each of the two floors. The lines say how many people go along each stretch; the zones say how many are inside and how long they stay. The camera is the same for both floors, so the comparison carries no differences of mounting or criteria. Neither the line nor the zone is asked for in words: they are drawn once and they stay, and that is why this month's upper walkway compares with the same walkway a year ago.

What changes

What changes for operations, for asset management and for security

A corridor with little footfall is not a bad corridor: it is a corridor with the wrong activity in it. This figure tells you which is which, and it tells you with numbers that do not depend on who is looking. With both floors compared, the asset manager knows which stretches can carry a high rent, which ones need a different use, and what can honestly be promised to whoever is considering the empty unit at the end. And when the mix changes, the same frame will say whether it worked, measured the same way as before.

What people usually ask

Does this measure how each shop is performing?

No. It measures footfall and dwell time in corridors and zones of the centre, which is common space. It does not look inside the units, does not count anyone's sales and does not judge any tenant. What it provides is context: how many people walk past each stretch. What that tenant does with the people walking past is their business and their own data. If a conversation shifts towards monitoring a retailer, this camera is not the tool for it.

Is it useful for deciding where to put a new use?

That is exactly what it is used for. A corridor with little footfall and an empty unit at the end is a place where the current use is attracting nobody. With several months of the series in front of you, you can see whether the problem is the stretch or the day, try a change, and measure it the same way as before. A person signs the decision; IRIS only puts the number on the table.

Is the counting anonymous here too?

Yes, on all six cameras in this sector. IRIS counts bodies crossing a line and bodies inside a drawn zone. It does not recognise faces, does not compare them with anything and does not follow a person from one floor to another. The journeys that come out are aggregated: they say how many go up, not who goes up. And the figures shown here belong to the illustration, not to any client.
