How the counting works

Counting is not something you ask for. You draw a line.

There are two lines and two zones here. One line sits at the car park mouth and another at the foot of the escalator: whatever crosses them is added, with the direction it was going. The two zones are painted over the two corridors and say how many people are inside and how long they stay. The journey comes from chaining those steps together, always anonymously and in aggregate: IRIS does not follow a person around the centre, it adds up nameless trips. A line does not fit in a sentence: it is drawn on the image, and that is why January can be compared with June.

What changes

What changes for operations, for asset management and for security

A corridor like that is not fixed with more signage. It is fixed by changing what sits at the end of it: bringing there the activity people are looking for, moving an access, putting the next event on the cold side instead of the one that is already full. For that you need to know the right wing takes eight times more people than the left, and to know it the same way every month. With that comparison on the table, talking to a tenant on the cold side stops being an argument and becomes arithmetic.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS follow each visitor around the centre?

No. IRIS does not recognise faces and does not tie one person's movements to a name. What it does is count bodies at each line and each zone, and add those crossings up into anonymous, aggregated journeys: how many go from the car park to the food court, how many change floor. The result is a map of where people go, not a file on anyone. If someone asks to follow one particular person, this camera is not the tool for it.

Why isn't counting the entrance enough?

Because the entrance tells you how many came and nothing else. IRIS also tells you where they came in, where they stayed and which areas they avoided. Two days with the same door figure can have the left wing dead on one and full on the other, and that difference is exactly what changes decisions: where the campaign goes, which corridor needs a different activity, what rent each stretch can carry.

What about the shop signs visible in the image?

They are not used at all. IRIS measures footfall through corridors and zones drawn on the floor; it does not read signs and does not need to know what occupies each unit. Stretches are identified by their position on the centre's own floor plan. If the tenant changes tomorrow, the measurement stays the same and the historical series does not break.
