Thirty-four minutes of waiting, and only three lanes open
The same apron, measured instead of watched. Three lines are drawn: one at the entrance, one across the truck lanes and one across the car lane. Every vehicle that crosses a line is added, and the time it takes between the first and the second is that vehicle's real wait. Two zones are painted on the ground, the truck queue and the car lane, and there you see how many are inside at any moment. IRIS does not look at who is in the vehicles: it counts objects on wheels and measures how long they stand still.

How the counting works
Counting is not something you ask for. You draw a line.
Three lines and two zones, all drawn on the image. A line does not fit in a sentence: you have to decide where it runs and in which direction, and only a stroke settles that. It is drawn once and there it stays, which is why the wait on a Tuesday in October and the one on a Sunday in August are measured exactly the same way and anybody can repeat the count. What is counted here is vehicles, not people, so this camera does not carry the Spanish Metrology Centre certification: that covers people counting and nothing else, and stretching it would be a lie.

The queue at a vehicle crossing is a political problem before it is an operational one: it is visible from the road and it makes the papers. With the real curve per lane and per hour, opening the fourth lane at eleven in the morning stops being a hunch and becomes a decision with a figure behind it, and whoever has to ask for more staff asks with a month's series in hand instead of an impression. It also works the other way round, which usually matters more: proving that at seven in the evening nobody is needed, and saving that shift.
What people usually ask
Can you tell how long one specific lorry waited?
You can measure how long a vehicle takes between the first line and the second, because it is the same object being followed across the image for a few minutes. What is not done is storing that attached to an identity: no plate, no company, no driver. What ends up in the report is the mean, the median and the tail of the waits for that hour, not a file on one lorry. To decide whether to open a lane, the mean is what you need.
Why isn't the figure the barrier system already gives enough?
Because that figure says how many have crossed, and that is all. It starts counting when the vehicle reaches the barrier, so it knows nothing about the previous forty minutes: the queue is exactly what it cannot see. IRIS measures from the entrance to the apron, which is where the real wait begins and where the decision to open another lane is made. They are two different numbers and you need both.
What if a lorry sits still for half an hour with a breakdown?
It shows up in the series immediately, because a breakdown does not look like a queue: a queue rises and falls slowly, while a breakdown is a flat peak in a single lane while the others keep moving. That shape can be described in words — «tell me if a lane stops moving vehicles for more than ten minutes while the others keep going» — and from then on it is just another alert. Counting and alerting are two different things, and the same camera can do both.
