How many people are inside the compound right now
The same gate, measured instead of watched. On one side, the lane where vehicles come in; on the other, a pedestrian turnstile where somebody with a backpack has just badged through. Next to the booth there is a smaller staff door. IRIS counts how many people cross each of the two, in which direction and at what time, and from that it knows how many people are inside the compound at any moment. It counts bodies crossing a line. It recognises no faces, knows who nobody is, and does not need to in order to give the figure.

IRIS incorporates NeuralPax, a separate licence certified by the Spanish Metrology Centre for people counting, occupancy and crowd-flow control. That the figure is right is guaranteed by a third party, not by us, and that is why it holds up against the regulations in force. The certification covers that measurement — counting people — not the whole product.
How the counting works
Counting is not something you ask for. You draw a line.
There is a line drawn over the turnstile and another over the staff door: cross them inwards and you are added, cross them outwards and you come off. And there is a zone painted over the whole gate apron, telling you how many people are waiting there and for how long. Neither the line nor the zone is asked for in words: they are drawn once on the image and there they stay, so a Tuesday and a Sunday are measured the same way and anybody can repeat the count. Counting people is the only measurement we hold certified by the Spanish Centre for Metrology, and it is done by NeuralPax, an independent licence that sits inside IRIS. Mind the scope: what is certified is people counting, not the rest of what IRIS does. We do not claim the accuracy. We certify it.

This number is not an alarm: it is the answer to a question you ask on the worst day. If the compound has to be cleared, knowing there are four hundred and twelve people inside is the difference between searching blind and knowing how many are still to come out. The rest of the days it does the usual job: matching shifts to the real arrival curve, knowing what time the second gate needs opening and answering with a figure, not an impression, when somebody asks how many people go through there. And because the measurement is certified by a third party, the number does not depend on anyone taking our word for it.
What people usually ask
Is this staff time and attendance?
No, and it matters that it is not. IRIS counts bodies crossing a line: it knows one hundred and eighty-six people have come in this hour, it does not know who any of them are. There are no names, no faces, no records and nothing that could be matched against a payroll. Time and attendance is done by the card reader, which is a different system with different rules. What is here is an aggregate number and nothing else.
Is the figure good enough to justify a capacity limit to whoever has to authorise it?
Yes, and that is exactly what the certification is for. Counting people is the only measurement we hold certified by the Spanish Centre for Metrology, through NeuralPax, an independent licence that sits inside IRIS. That means the figure is verified by a third party, not by us. Everything else IRIS does does not carry that certification, and we do not present it as if it did.
Can you tell how long a specific person has been inside?
No, and it is not a limitation we plan to remove. IRIS recognises nobody, so it cannot pair an entry with the exit of the same person. What it gives is the balance: how many came in, how many went out and how many are still inside. For what the number is for — matching shifts and knowing how many people have to be brought out on the day they have to be — the balance is more than enough, and knowing who anybody is adds nothing.
