The kerb jams before the terminal does
Half past six in the morning at the departures kerb. Three lanes and none of them moving: cars double-parked, a taxi across the middle, an SUV with its boot open taking out cases and a line waiting for a gap. The shuttle is in its bay and people are boarding with big luggage. Along the pavement a steady stream walks towards the doors. IRIS counts the vehicles entering the drop-off lane, measures how long each one stays and how much kerb is left free. It reads no number plate here and does not know who is driving: it counts vehicles and measures minutes.

How the counting works
Counting is not something you ask for. You draw a line.
There is a line drawn at the mouth of the drop-off lane: whatever crosses it is added. And there is a zone painted over that lane, telling you how many vehicles are inside at any moment and how long each one stays. A second zone covers the shuttle bay, so you know whether it is clear when a bus arrives. Neither the line nor the zones are asked for in words: they are drawn once on the image and there they stay, so a Tuesday and a Sunday are measured the same way.

What changes
What changes for operations, for the passenger and for maintenance
The kerb is the first thing a passenger sees and the last thing anybody looks at from the control room. With the figure per time slot, whoever runs landside access knows when the drop-off lane saturates, how many minutes a car stays on average and whether the shuttle bay is blocked exactly when the buses arrive. That is how you open another lane, put someone on the kerb at the hour it matters, or change the traffic direction. And you decide with last Tuesday's figure, not with somebody's impression.
What people usually ask
Does this camera read number plates?
Not here. This framing is set up to measure: it counts vehicles crossing a line and measures how long each one stays inside a zone. IRIS can read number plates on other cameras and for other purposes, but to know whether the kerb is saturated you do not need to know whose car each one is, and on this camera it is not known.
Is it used to fine anybody?
No. IRIS decides nothing and calls nobody on its own: it alerts whoever runs the kerb, with the lane, the time and the video of that minute. What happens next is a decision made by a person and by the airport's own procedure, and that takes a great deal more than a framing that counts cars.
