A wide concourse that narrows abruptly at the mouth of an escalator. In front of the narrowing there are a hundred and eighty people standing, packed and not moving, with cabin bags and rucksacks; the gate signs hang right above them. A plug at a narrowing does not clear itself: it grows, because people keep arriving from behind who cannot see what is in front. With the alert, whoever is on duty in the terminal sends someone to the mouth of the concourse to divert people down the clear corridor and opens the escalator next to it, and the plug clears in two minutes instead of twenty. What is avoided is not just the delay: it is a hundred and eighty people with luggage standing still and packed together in a place where nobody wants to be still and packed together.

Is this a security alarm?
No, and it is best not to treat it as one. What is in front of the camera is people standing with luggage waiting to go down an escalator: it is a circulation problem, not a security one, and it is fixed by diverting people down the corridor alongside. The alert goes to whoever runs the terminal and nobody else, and it says how many people there are and how long they have been stopped. Treating a plug as an emergency is the surest way of turning it into one.
Doesn't it fire every time people are waiting?
No, because the rule does not look at how many people there are: it looks at whether they are moving. A queue at a boarding gate has plenty of people and it moves, and it fires nothing. What fires it is a group standing still for more than two minutes at a point everybody has to pass. And if the alert turns out to be a nuisance at a particular spot, you change the number in the sentence and try another: the rule is a written sentence, not something that has to be reprogrammed.
