Shop floor over capacity

A fashion store at its busiest: the middle of the floor is so full you cannot get between the rails, and customers keep coming in through the entrance on the left. At the back, the mannequin wall and the fitting-room curtains. IRIS counts how many people there are and where they are; it does not know who any of them are.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • people packed together
  • store entrance

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

the number of people per square metre on the floor goes past the limit the store has set and stays there

Then

  1. alert the duty manager with the camera and the area that has filled up
  2. ask for someone to clear the middle of the floor and sort out the entrance
  3. log the time, so the store learns what hour it fills up every day
The instruction that set it up«Tell me when the floor gets so full that people can't get between the rails, and tell me while it is filling up, not once nobody else fits.»

What changes

What changes for whoever runs the store

When the store jams up, people stop buying. The customer who can't reach the rail puts down what she was holding and leaves, and that never shows up in any incident log. Today the duty manager finds out when he walks the floor and the jam is already there. With IRIS the alert reaches him while the floor is filling up, with the camera and the area, and he still has time to send someone to clear the middle and sort out the entrance. This is not a security problem: it is sales walking back out.

What people usually ask

Is this the same as capacity control?

No. Capacity is a legal limit measured at the door: how many people are inside the premises. This measures something else — how tightly packed the floor is — and they are two different figures. A store can be well under its legal capacity and still have an entrance aisle nobody can cross. It is the second figure that makes a customer turn round and leave, which is why it is the one the manager cares about.

Does IRIS know who the customers inside are?

No. IRIS counts people and sees where they are standing. It does not recognise faces, it does not compare them against any database, it does not store who anyone is and it does not follow a person from one store to another. To know that an aisle is impassable you only need to count bodies, and that is all it does.

What if the store is full because of a promotion and that day it is normal?

The limit is set by the store, not by us, and it can be different per area and per time of day. On promotion day you raise the limit for the display area, where the crowd is expected, and leave the limit for the middle of the floor as it is, because that is where people have to be able to walk. That is what keeps the alert meaningful: if it fires all the time, the manager stops looking at it within a week.

A different case every time

We won't just tell you. We'll show you.

It is a summary of the real screen: it plays by itself, step by step, and shows only the path of one case. The actual tool has far more than fits in here.

  1. The hour, as a grid
  2. You look where it's dark
  3. You jump to that minute

And the best part

Whoever is on duty already has a job.Watching forty screens does not fit into the shift.

No shift has time to spare. IRIS watches all forty at once and brings only what needs to be seen, with its camera and its time. What happens next is that person’s call.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
