How the counting works
Counting is not something you ask for. You draw a line.
The line sits at the mouth of the cubicle corridor: whoever crosses it inwards has gone in to try clothes on, whoever crosses it outwards has come out. The painted area covers the spot where people stand and wait. The difference between what goes in and what comes out is how many cubicles are busy, and the time between the two is how long trying on takes. A line cannot be described in a sentence: it is traced once onto the image, and that is why Monday's figure and Saturday's are measured the same way.

What changes for whoever runs the store
Someone who hangs the clothes back up and walks away from the fitting rooms is a sale that was one step from closing. They had already chosen, they already had it in their hand, and the only thing missing was a free cubicle. The floor manager never sees it, because the customer who gets tired doesn't complain: she hangs the garment on the nearest rail and leaves the store. With the line at the mouth of the corridor he has how many are waiting, how long people take inside and how many have walked away, and from that he knows whether the problem is cubicles or staffing at the door. The figures on the illustration are an example, not any store's measurement.
What people usually ask
Does the camera see inside the cubicles?
No, and it never will. The camera looks at the mouth of the corridor and at the area where people stand waiting; there is no camera inside a cubicle and there cannot be one. IRIS counts who goes into the corridor and who comes out, and that is all it needs to know how many cubicles are busy and how long people take inside.
How does it know a cubicle is busy if it can't see inside?
From the curtain and from the count. A cubicle with the curtain drawn and someone who went in and hasn't come out is busy; when that person crosses the line outwards again, it is free. It is the same count the assistant at the door keeps in her head, done on its own and without losing anyone's turn when five people are waiting.
Does IRIS know who the customer waiting is?
No. It counts people crossing a line and people inside an area. It does not recognise faces, it does not compare them against any database, it does not store who anyone is and it does not link anyone to what they try on or to what they buy afterwards. What comes out of here is how many and how long, and nothing else.
