A badly lit area simply stops being visited. Nobody has to complain: people turn away before they get there and that part of the store empties out, and you see it in how customers spread across the floor long before you see it in the suggestion box. The manager doesn't notice because he is at the tills or in the stockroom, and a blown tube can stay like that for two weeks. With IRIS the alert reaches him the same day, with the sector and the time. It is the cheapest fault to fix and the one you notice fastest in the part of the store that has emptied out.

What about at night, when the store closes and everything goes off?
The rule has opening hours, and outside them it says nothing. At night what matters is the opposite: a sector lighting up when it shouldn't, or somebody moving across the floor with the store closed. That is a different rule, written with the same words and with the hours the other way round.
Do we need a light sensor in each area?
No. It is measured on the image from the camera that is already up there: IRIS compares what it sees now with what it normally sees in that same area at that same hour. A sensor measures one point and has to be wired in; the camera is already looking at the whole floor and sees where the light has dropped and how far it reaches.
How do I know it isn't just getting dark outside?
Because one of them changes slowly and evenly across the whole floor, and the other drops all at once in one sector and leaves the rest untouched. The rule looks at exactly that difference: half the floor dark and the other half lit. If the whole store dims at the same time and gradually, night is falling and nothing fires.
