CAM-516

A cash machine open in the street and two people inside the zone

Mid-morning, on the pavement. The cash machine is open: the swung door and its insides are visible, and a technician is kneeling in front of it with the toolbox on the ground. Behind him, the service van, with its rear doors open and the trays in sight. Inside the zone drawn around the machine there are two more people. IRIS states that and nothing more: an open cash machine, a technician working and two people inside the zone. It does not know who they are or what they came for, and it does not say.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • cash machine open
  • technician working on the machine
  • toolbox
  • service van
  • person inside the zone, on the left
  • person inside the zone, on the right
  • bollard

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 14 minHow long the machine has been open
  • 2People inside the zone, technician not counted
  • 22 sHow long they have been inside the zone
  • 1Service staff on the scene
  • 12:36Time of the alert
  • 12:22:04Video saved from

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

the cash machine door is open and two or more people are inside the surrounding zone for more than twenty seconds

Then

  1. alert the control room with the camera, the time and how many people are inside the zone
  2. save the video from the minute the machine was opened
  3. leave the alert in the maintenance report, with the time it was opened and the time it was closed
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if the cash machine is open for maintenance and there is more than one person inside the surrounding zone, not counting the technician.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the branch network

During maintenance, a cash machine is the most fragile thing a branch has: it is open, there is money inside and the person repairing it is on their knees with their back to the pavement. What is missing there today is not a camera — there already is one — but somebody to watch it during those twenty minutes. IRIS counts how many people are inside the zone while the machine is open and alerts the control room. If they are two customers who wanted to take out cash, nothing has happened and the alert is closed in ten seconds. That is the whole cost of being wrong; the cost of not finding out is a good deal higher.

What people usually ask

Is IRIS saying that those two people are going to do something?

No, and it cannot say it. IRIS does not read intentions and does not predict. What it has detected are two checkable things: the machine is open and there are two people inside the zone. They may well be two customers who came to take out cash and found the machine under repair; in fact that is the usual case. The alert accuses nobody: it puts an eye where right now there is none. The one who watches the video and decides what to do is a person.

Why does it alert if the maintenance was scheduled?

Precisely because it was scheduled. The alert is not ‘a cash machine is open’: that is already known and interrupts nobody. The alert is ‘a cash machine is open and the technician is not alone’. If the maintenance was not scheduled, then the first line really is that a machine is open at that hour — and that too is a sentence somebody writes once and IRIS applies every time.

What does this camera not see?

It checks no credentials: for IRIS the technician is simply the person kneeling in front of the open machine, and if somebody else comes tomorrow, that will be another kneeling person. It does not see inside the machine, it does not count banknotes and it does not tell a customer from anyone else. And the street has a limit of its own: at midday the shadows are long and hard, and a shadow can stretch a person’s box until it reaches into the zone. That is why the zone is drawn tight against the wall, why you have to be inside it for more than twenty seconds, and why the alert always carries the video.

Simulation · how IRIS works

A new case each time. Always the same screen.

It plays by itself and shows one case from start to finish. It is a summary: the real screen has far more functions than fit in this box.

  1. The alert fires
  2. You open it
  3. You confirm or dismiss

And the best part

Video tells you what happened. An alert reaches you while it is happening.

Reviewing the recording helps you explain. Hearing about it at the time helps you get there. Two different things, and until now you only had the first.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
