Cash room, first thing in the morning. An employee is handling cash at the table: the note counter running, the bundles and trays in front of him. Opposite, the chair for the second control is empty and turned aside; his colleague is walking away towards the vault, whose door stands open. IRIS counts the bodies in the room while there is cash on the table: there is one.

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the branch network

Dual control is not a recommendation: it is the procedure. And most of the time it breaks with no ill intent, because somebody stepped out for a tray. Today that only shows up if someone reviews the recording, and nobody does. IRIS says it while it is happening, which is when it can still be fixed with one sentence — come back to the table — and it saves the video of that minute, which is what internal control needs afterwards to close the matter in a minute rather than a morning. The camera concludes nothing: it puts it in plain sight that a procedure requiring two is being carried out by one.

Is IRIS saying this employee has done something wrong?

No, and it is worth reading slowly. IRIS accuses nobody, identifies nobody and concludes nothing. It sees that a procedure requiring two people present is being carried out by one, and it says so with the time and the video. The most common explanation is the dullest: the colleague stepped out for a tray. Whoever watches the video, decides and closes the matter is internal control, which is a person. The camera does not say there has been fraud: it says somebody is missing from the table.

How does the camera know a second person is required?

Because somebody told it once. The institution writes the rule in its own words — in this room, while there is cash on the table, there must be two people — and from then on it applies itself, every day and in every room where the same rule holds. Decide once, IRIS applies it always. And if the policy changes, you change the sentence, not the system.

Does IRIS know how much money is on the table?

No. It does not count banknotes, does not read documents, does not read the counting machine's display and does not know what operation is under way. It counts bodies in a room and measures how long they have been there. Everything else — what was being counted, how much and why — comes from the institution's own systems and from the people who work there.
