How the counting works
Counting is not something you ask for. You draw a line.
One line is drawn at the head of the queue and another at the exit of the checkpoint. Whatever crosses the first joins the count; whatever crosses the second leaves it. The difference is how many people are inside, and the time between the two is how long it takes to get through. Over the zigzag there is a painted area showing how far the queue reaches. None of this can be asked for in words: it is traced once onto the frame and stays there, so the seven o'clock figure and the eleven o'clock figure are measured the same way.

What changes for whoever runs the station
Today the decision to open another screening lane is made by looking out of the window, and by the time you can see it from the window it has been made too late. With the two lines in place, the station manager has the waiting time to the minute and, above all, where it is heading: seven minutes rising is not the same as seven minutes falling. With that he opens the fifth lane before the queue reaches the concourse. And at the end of the month he has the curve for the whole day, which is what it takes to decide how many lanes are staffed at seven and how many at eleven. That is no longer a bad morning: it is a staff rota.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS know who is in the queue?
No, IRIS does not know who is in the queue: it counts people, it does not identify anyone. It does not read faces, it does not compare against any database and it keeps no record of anybody. What comes out of this camera is four numbers — how many are waiting, how long it takes, how many get through per hour and when it fills up — and those numbers belong to the group, never to a person. In a station this weighs more than anywhere else, because a great many people pass through who never asked for anything: that is why the counting was designed to measure the flow and not to follow the people in it.
How is the waiting time measured if nobody is followed?
The waiting time is worked out from two numbers, not from a person. IRIS knows how many people have entered the queue and how many have left the checkpoint, and from that comes how many are inside and how fast it is clearing. A hundred people ahead and a lane clearing twenty a minute is a five-minute wait: the sum is about the whole queue, which is why nobody has to be followed or identified. IRIS people counting is type-approved by the Spanish Metrology Centre: the figure that comes out of here is guaranteed by a third party, not by us. The scope is worth stating plainly: what is approved is that measurement, people counting, not the product as a whole.
What happens if the queue runs out of the camera's frame?
If the queue runs out of frame, the area stops counting properly, and that has to be said before installing, not afterwards. The two lines stay reliable, because the same people come in and go out at the same places, but 'how many are inside' falls short as soon as the queue turns a corner the camera cannot see. There are two fixes: raising the camera so the frame covers the whole zigzag, or adding a second camera that picks up where the first ends. Commissioning looks at exactly this, and if a spot is not good enough to measure properly, we say so.
