How the counting works

Counting is not something you ask for. You draw a line.

There are two lines, one over each escalator, and each line has a direction: the upper one adds what goes up, the lower one what comes down. If somebody crosses a line against its direction it is logged separately, because walking up the down escalator is a risk, not a traffic figure. And when minutes go by without anyone crossing either line, that time is added up as an escalator running empty. The direction of a line cannot be explained in a sentence: it is drawn as an arrow onto the frame, once, and that is why January's figure is measured the same way as July's.

What changes

What changes for whoever runs the station

The maintenance manager has two decisions on his desk and no numbers to take them with. The first is what time it pays to run both escalators upwards: when a train arrives everyone goes up at once, and when one leaves everyone comes down at once, but nobody knows the exact hour it flips. The second is how many hours a day the escalator turns with nobody on it, which is electricity paid for and wear piling up: that is what sets the shutdown or the on-demand start for the dead hours. With the two lines in place, both questions have an answer by time band. And the against-the-flow count adds a third: if six people a day walk up the down escalator, the direction is wrong at that hour, and it is not the people's fault.

What people usually ask

Can IRIS reverse an escalator by itself?

No, IRIS does not move the escalator: it measures and it flags, and the switching is done by whoever operates the installation. What IRIS brings is the moment and the reason: at 8:20 three times as many people go up as come down, and that shows in the series for every day, not in the impression of one morning. If you want that signal to reach the system that governs the escalators, it is a connection that gets agreed and tested beforehand, not something that appears on its own. We prefer to say it plainly: the figure is ours, the switching belongs to whoever is responsible for the machine.

How does IRIS know the escalator is running empty?

IRIS knows it because it counts absences, not only presences. If the escalator is running and for minutes on end nobody crosses its line, that time goes into a separate counter: escalator turning with nobody on it. At the end of the day there is no impression, there is a figure — so many hours and minutes — and at the end of the month there is a pattern by time band. That is where you see that between eleven at night and one in the morning the escalator has been running for nobody for years, and that is a bill you can cut without touching the service.

Is the person walking up the down escalator identified?

No, nobody is identified: what gets counted is how many times a day it happens, not who does it. IRIS logs a crossing against the direction, with its time, and that is where the record ends. There is no face, no file and no comparison with any database. Nor is the number meant to tell anyone off: six people a day walking up the down side is not a manners problem, it is a warning that upward capacity is short at that hour. It reads as a signal about the installation, not as a list of people.
