A full table and an open one with nobody, five metres away
Saturday, small hours, on the main floor. Seven people are seated around the centre table and another nine stand behind them, playing or watching: there is not a free chair. Five metres away, an open table with its dealer has gone three quarters of an hour without a single player, its whole ring of chairs empty. IRIS counts how many are seated, how many are standing around and how many open tables have nobody at all. Both ends of demand fit in the same frame, and until now nobody measured them.

How the counting works
Counting is not something you ask for. You draw a line.
Two areas are drawn on the floor: one over the full table, with its chairs and the ring of people around it, and one over the open table. And a line crosses the walkway between them, saying how many people pass in front of the empty table without stopping. Neither the line nor the area can be asked for in words: they are drawn once onto the image and stay there, so a Tuesday figure and a Saturday figure are measured the same way. Asking is for finding. Counting is for measuring. And they are not done the same way. Counting people is the only measurement we hold approval for from the Spanish Metrology Centre, and it is NeuralPax that does it, a separate licence built into IRIS. We don't claim accuracy: we certify it.

What changes
What changes for the floor manager and for compliance
The floor manager stops deciding by eye which table to open and which to close. With the figure by time slot he knows when a second table of a given game is needed, when it is surplus and how many dealers each night takes. An open table costs the same whether anyone plays or not: it costs a person. And because it is measured the same way every time, one figure serves both Monday's meeting and whatever report has to be filed, with no argument about where it came from.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS know who is sitting at the table?
No. IRIS does not recognise faces, does not compare them against any database and does not identify any player. It counts bodies inside a drawn area and bodies crossing a line. It knows there are seven people seated and nine standing; it does not know who any of them are, and it does not need to in order to give the figure. On a gaming floor that is not a setting you switch on: IRIS carries no biometrics.
Does the camera say how much is being played at that table?
No. The camera measures people and time: how many are seated, how many stand waiting and how long a table has been open with nobody at it. A table's takings come from the gaming system, not from the camera, and it is worth saying so before anyone assumes otherwise. What IRIS adds is the other half of the picture, the half nobody has today: how much demand was standing in front while that happened.
Does this count stand up in front of whoever has to check it?
Yes, and that is why the line is drawn instead of described.
