How the counting works
Counting is not something you ask for. You draw a line.
A line is drawn tight against the edge of the counter: whoever crosses it has reached a window. And two areas are painted on the floor, one over the line behind the rope and one over the strip in front of the windows, telling you how many are waiting and how long each transaction takes. Neither the line nor the areas can be asked for in words: they are drawn once onto the image and stay there, so a Tuesday figure and a Saturday figure are measured the same way. Asking is for finding. Counting is for measuring. And they are not done the same way. Counting people is the only measurement we hold approval for from the Spanish Metrology Centre, and it is NeuralPax that does it, a separate licence built into IRIS. We don’t claim accuracy. We certify it.

What changes
What changes for the floor manager and for compliance
The cage is the last thing a guest sees before going home, and a seven-minute queue there is remembered longer than two good hours at the table. Today the floor manager opens a fourth window when the line is already long enough to notice. With this figure he sees it while it is happening, and at the end of the month he has the whole curve: what time the cage fills up on each day of the week. Shifts stop being set by eye. Not everything that matters is an alarm: sometimes what matters is a number.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS know who is standing in the cage queue?
No. IRIS counts bodies: it knows nine people are waiting and have been there seven minutes, and nothing else. It does not recognise faces, it does not compare anyone against a list, it cannot tell one guest from another and it stores no identity. What it gives back is a figure per time slot, and that figure is there to open another window, not to know who was standing there.
Why is counting drawn while an alert is asked for in words?
Because they are two different things. An alert can be described in a sentence: «tell me if someone steps over the rope». A line cannot: you have to say exactly where it runs and in which direction, and only a stroke on the image pins that down. Asking is for finding. Counting is for measuring. And they are not done the same way. That is why the figure is repeatable and auditable: tonight’s line is the same line as next month’s, and that is what makes it approvable.
