Roulette table, close to midnight. The dealer has his hand raised: that is the gesture that closes the betting. On the other side of the cloth, a player has leaned over the table with his arm out and his hand resting on one square. Today this rests on the dealer seeing it, and the dealer is paying, clearing and watching the wheel at the same time. If he misses it, nothing happened; if he catches it, he has to decide in a second with the guest right there. By the dealer’s gesture, which is the same at every table and on every shift: the hand rising above the cloth. That gesture marks second zero. The crop of the cloth is drawn once onto the image — where the betting area starts and ends — and the rule is written in words, in one sentence. Decide once. IRIS applies it every time, at that table and at the other eleven.
Doesn’t the dealer already see this?
Almost always, yes, and that is why the system takes nobody’s job. The dealer is paying out, clearing chips and following the wheel, with six people talking at him. The camera does one thing only, and it does not blink. And above all it leaves a record: the exact time and the video, which is what you need when somebody asks three days later.
