CAM-526

One dark screen in the middle of a bank of machines that are all lit

Bank of machines, two in the morning. On either side four people are playing, each at their own. In the middle, one machine has a dark screen: no light, no image, and in front of it not even a chair — just a gap in the floor. A step away, a woman stands waiting. IRIS sees the dark screen surrounded by lit ones and counts from which minute it has been that way. What it sees is a machine that has stopped; why it stopped, it does not know.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • machine with a dark screen
  • gap in the floor with no chair
  • people playing at the machines beside it
  • machine lit and in use
  • person waiting on her feet
  • second bank of machines at the back
  • empty armchair pushed aside

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 26 minThe screen has been dark for
  • 6Machines in this bank
  • 4Machines in use right now
  • 1People waiting nearby
  • 00:38Time of the alert

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

a machine has had a dark screen for more than ten minutes and the others in its bank are still lit

Then

  1. alert the floor manager with the machine's position in the bank
  2. save the video from the minute the screen went dark
  3. add up the hours that position has spent dark this month
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if a machine's screen stays dark for more than ten minutes while the ones beside it stay lit.»

What changes

What changes for the floor manager and for compliance

A dark machine does not call anyone. It gets found when somebody walks past, and on a big floor that can take hours: hours of a position that takes up space, costs the same and nobody uses, with people waiting two metres away. The floor manager gets the alert the moment the screen goes dark, with the exact position in the bank and the video of the minute. And at month's end there is something that does not exist today: how many hours each position has spent dark. That figure sets the maintenance order without an argument.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS know why the machine is dark?

No, and that is exactly this camera's limit. IRIS sees a machine with a dark screen surrounded by lit ones. It does not know why it is dark: it could be a fault, a restart or someone switching it off on purpose. That is for the technician to say, not the camera. What IRIS adds is the exact minute it went dark, the place in the bank and the video, so whoever walks over already knows what they are walking into.

Does IRIS have to be connected to the machines?

No. IRIS looks at the picture from the camera already up on the ceiling, and a dark screen among lit ones is visible. It does not connect to the gaming system, does not read what is written on the screen and needs nobody to integrate anything. If the floor then wants to cross that alert with what its own system says, the money figure comes from there, not from the camera.

Is this for keeping an eye on the players?

No. What is being watched here is a machine. IRIS does not recognise faces, does not identify anyone and does not follow any player across the floor. It counts how many machines in the bank are in use and from which minute one has been dark. Someone waiting nearby is context for how urgent it is, not a person being tracked.

A different case every time

Everything comes in. Only what matters gets through.

This sums up what IRIS does with one alert, from the moment it appears until it is closed. The real screen holds far more; this is the main thread.

  1. The rule gets built
  2. It goes to every camera
  3. Published, it watches alone
  4. And then it fires

And the best part

The rule does not decide anything. It just never forgets, and it tells the person who decides.

You write once what needs watching, and it holds at three in the morning just as at noon. What to do with the alert is still a person’s decision.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
