The hand is going nowhere and the dealer's spot is empty

Card table, small hours. On the felt there is a hand half played out: cards dealt, bets placed. Five people sit waiting, chin in hand. The dealer's spot is empty and the chip rack has been left on its own in front of the table. Three metres away, the dealer is standing talking with a supervisor. IRIS sees the fact and does not dress it up: the table has gone two minutes forty seconds with nobody at the spot, and the hand is going nowhere.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • dealer's spot standing empty
  • felt of the table
  • cards dealt and the hand unfinished
  • chip rack with nobody in front of it
  • dealer away from the table
  • supervisor talking with him
  • players waiting in their seats
  • empty chairs in the foreground

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 2 min 40 sThe spot has been empty for
  • 4 min 10 sSince the last hand was finished
  • 5Players waiting at the table
  • 21-9Hands finished in the last hour
  • 01:12Time of the alert

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

the dealer's spot has been empty for more than two minutes and there is an unfinished hand on the felt

Then

  1. alert the floor manager with the table and how long it has been stopped
  2. save the video from the minute the spot was left empty
  3. leave the stoppage and how long it lasted in the night log
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if the dealer's spot stays empty for more than two minutes with an unfinished hand on the felt.»

What changes

What changes for the floor manager and for compliance

The pace of a table is money and compliance at the same time. The floor manager cares how many hands come out per hour, because a stopped table costs the same as a running one and produces less. And whoever owns compliance cares that the chip rack is not left on its own, because the procedure says it should not be. Today you know this if somebody happened to walk past. With IRIS you know it every time, with the exact minute and the video in front of you. IRIS does not say anyone did anything wrong: it says how long it was like that and when it started. The person who looks and decides is a person.

What people usually ask

Is IRIS saying the dealer did something wrong?

No, and it cannot. IRIS sees two facts: the spot has had nobody at it for a while and the hand is still unfinished. It does not know why. It could be a shift change, a question for the supervisor or a doubt about procedure, and all three are ordinary. What it delivers is the fact, the minute it started and the video. Whoever looks at it and decides what to do is the floor manager, who is a person. None of these cameras measures anyone's work.

What is the point of measuring the time between hands?

A stopped table costs the same as a running one. With stoppages measured you can see where the minutes go: shift changes badly staggered, questions that always come up at the same table, a game that jams at one particular hour. It is not a number for pointing at anyone, it is a number for organising the floor. And it works the other way too: a table running well ahead of pace may be asking for another one beside it.

Does IRIS recognise the people at the table?

No. IRIS does not recognise faces and does not identify players or staff. It sees whether there is a person at the spot or not, and that five people are sitting waiting. On a gaming floor that is not a setting you can switch on: it is what data protection requires, and that is why IRIS carries no biometrics. The fact is measured just as well without knowing who anyone is.

Simulation · how IRIS works

A new case each time. Always the same screen.

It plays by itself and shows one case from start to finish. It is a summary: the real screen has far more functions than fit in this box.

  1. Cameras on the map
  2. You draw an area

And the best part

You can add more cameras;you cannot add more hours to anyone’s day.

Cameras can be multiplied; a person’s hours cannot. IRIS looks at everything coming in and leaves them the one thing no machine does better: deciding what to do.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
