CAM-515

Someone has been in the ATM lobby for twenty-two minutes

Eleven thirty at night. The ATM lobby is open, as it is every night. One person is sitting on the floor next to the machine, with a backpack beside them, and has been there for twenty-two minutes without using the ATM. At the door, a customer who has just arrived has stopped on the mat and hasn’t come in. IRIS does not look at who anyone is: it measures how long each person has been inside the zone drawn on the floor, and it alerts when that time goes past the one that was set.

What IRIS understands

What it recognizes in this scene

  • person in the zone, 22 minutes
  • backpack on the floor
  • ATM on the left
  • ATM on the right
  • person stopped at the entrance
  • lobby door
  • trash can
  • lobby camera

What this camera measures

An alert says something’s happening. The reading says how much.

  • 22 minLongest time inside the zone
  • 15 minTime after which it alerts
  • 2People in the lobby
  • 0People who used a ATM in that time
  • 23:41Time of the alert
  • 23:19:08Video saved from

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client’s measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

someone has been inside the lobby for more than fifteen minutes without using either ATM, during night hours

Then

  1. alert the control room with the camera, the time and how many people are inside
  2. save the video from the minute the stay began
  3. leave the alert in the night report, with the time and with no data about who was there
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if anyone stays more than fifteen minutes in the ATM lobby between ten at night and seven in the morning, and tell me how many people are inside.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the branch network

An ATM lobby at night is where a customer decides whether to go in or go somewhere else. Nobody can watch forty lobbies at once, so today the only way to find out is for somebody to phone. IRIS doesn’t say who is there or why: it says that one person has been inside for twenty-two minutes and that a customer reached the door and didn’t come in. With that, somebody decides whether to go down, to call, or to do nothing. That person may simply be sheltering from the cold, and that’s an answer too: then what’s needed isn’t security, it’s social services. IRIS gives you the fact and the minute. The person is the one who draws the conclusion.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS know who the person in the lobby is?

No. IRIS does not recognize faces, it does not compare them with any list and it does not store any identity. All it measures is how long a body has been inside a zone drawn on the floor. The next day, the same person isn’t ‘the same person’ for IRIS: it’s another stay that starts at zero.

And what if that person is just sheltering from the cold?

On a winter night that’s the most likely explanation, and IRIS doesn’t say otherwise. An alert isn’t an accusation: it’s a nudge about a lobby that has been occupied for twenty-two minutes. The one who watches the video, goes down and asks is a person, and it’s that person who decides whether help is needed, whether security is needed, or whether nothing is needed at all. IRIS gives the fact and the minute. The conclusion isn’t its to draw.

What can this camera not do?

It doesn’t know why anyone is there, it doesn’t read intentions and it doesn’t tell apart a customer waiting their turn from someone taking a rest: for IRIS both are a body inside a zone for a while. It also doesn’t see well what happens on the other side of the glass: at night the window reflects the lobby itself, and a reflection can be counted as one more person. That’s why the zone is drawn on the floor and stops short of the glass, and why the alert always carries the video of that minute: so that whoever decides sees the scene and not a number.

A new case each time. Always the same screen.

It plays by itself and shows one case from start to finish. It’s a summary: the real screen has far more functions than fit in this box.

And the best part

There’s a moment when you can still act. It’s while it’s happening, and it’s short.

After that, all you can do is tell the story. IRIS speaks up at that moment — camera, time and images — and whoever is on call decides what to do with it.

Tell us your problem and we’ll say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

A person answers, the same working day.
