Mid-afternoon: an employee opens the restricted area with her badge and stands with her hand on the door, talking to the person waiting behind her. The access log will say a badge was used, and nothing more: it doesn’t say how many people were in front of the door or how long it stayed open. Those doors separate what anyone may see from what only the authorized may see. IRIS supplies that, with its video, and logs it without anyone having to watch a screen. Afterward, whoever reviews access sees in a minute what used to be hours of recording. And a door left open for convenience stops being invisible.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS read the badge of whoever opens the door?
No. IRIS does not read cards, does not read readers and does not identify anyone. It sees a door leaf open, how long it’s been that way and how many bodies are in front of it. Who opened it’s known by the access control system; how many people were standing there’s known by the camera. Bringing the two together is the job of internal control, which is a person, deciding with both halves of the figure in front of them.
Is the camera accusing anyone of slipping in?
No, and it isn’t written that way anywhere. The camera doesn’t know whether the person waiting outside is allowed in, whether they’re following with an archive shopping cart or whether they’re there for something else. It only says: this door was open for this long and there were two bodies in front of it. Whether that’s fine or not is decided by a person, with the access log beside them.
Does IRIS record what’s inside the restricted area?
Only if there’s a camera inside, and that’s for the institution to decide, not us. This camera looks at the corridor: it sees the door, who is standing in front of it and how long it stays open. What can be seen of the inside is what can be seen from outside while the leaf is open, exactly as anyone walking down the corridor would see it.
