Tension at the front desk
The front desk of an emergency department, late in the day. Two people are very close together, one on each side of the counter, arms out and moving abruptly. Another member of staff is coming over from the far side with her hands up in front of her, and a security officer is crossing the room at a brisk walk. Against the wall, people who are waiting have turned to look. IRIS sees two people very close together moving abruptly in a place where that is not normal. It does not know who either of them is, it does not say who is in the right and it classifies nobody.

What this camera measures
An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

The rule
You decide once. IRIS applies it always.
If
two people get very close at the desk and move abruptly, or somebody bangs on the screen, and it carries on for a few seconds
Then
- alert the control room and the security post with the camera and the desk
- open the video of those seconds so whoever is on their way knows what they are walking into
- log the time and the desk, so the hospital learns at what hours and at which desks it happens
The instruction that set it up«Tell me when two people get very close at the desk and start moving abruptly, or when somebody bangs on the screen, so that someone gets there sooner.»
What changes
What changes for whoever runs the ward
Today, whoever is on the desk is on their own. If things go wrong they have to press a button: if they have time, if they can reach it, and if at that moment they remember where it is. Everything else depends on somebody nearby turning round and seeing it. IRIS does not depend on anybody pressing anything. The camera sees the situation while it is happening and the alert goes out on its own, with the desk and the video of those seconds, so whoever arrives knows what they are arriving to. And very often the person who is upset is a frightened relative or somebody who has been waiting five hours for news: what is needed there is not a report, it is for a person to get there sooner and bring the temperature down. Nobody is promising this means nothing ever happens again. What changes is who finds out, and when.
What people usually ask
Does this accuse somebody of assaulting a member of staff?
No. IRIS detects a situation — two people very close together moving abruptly, somebody banging on a screen — and raises an alert so that someone comes. It does not say who started it, it does not apportion blame, it does not label anyone as aggressive and it is not a tool for disciplining anybody. Very often the person who is upset is a frightened relative or somebody who has been waiting hours for news. What is needed there is not a case file: it is for a person to get there before it goes any further.
Does the camera recognise the person on the desk or the person in front of it?
No. IRIS does not identify anyone: it does not recognise faces, it does not compare them against any database, it does not know who any patient, visitor or member of staff is, it holds no record of anybody and it does not touch the clinical record. It sees bodies, where they are and how they move. To know that somebody has to be sent to the desk, you do not need a single name.
Isn't the panic button we already have enough?
The button is still needed and this does not replace it. The thing is that a button has to be pressed, and it gets pressed when the person can: with both hands busy, with their back turned or with somebody leaning over them, very often it does not get pressed. The camera watches the desk the whole time and needs nobody to do anything. When both have gone off, the alert arrives just the same; when the button could not be reached, only the camera's alert arrives, and that is the time that matters.
Simulation · how IRIS works
No extra alarms here. Just what needs looking at.
Not a recorded video, not an explanatory drawing: a summary of the real screen, with a different case every time it starts. There is a lot more behind it.
- The rule gets built
- It goes to every camera
- Published, it watches alone
- And then it fires
Next step
The city
Who watches the cameras of a whole city?
23 cases: 18 raise an alert when something happens and 5 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
The motorway
Who watches an entire motorway?
10 cases: 8 raise an alert when something happens and 2 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
And the best part
One camera, and you already have a watchman. Four thousand cameras, and you have four thousand watchmen.
None of them tires, none of them looks away and none of them works shifts. And there is nothing to install: the cameras you already have can start understanding what they see.
Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.
