What changes for whoever runs the ward
A waiting area is a place where people are supposed to sit still. That is exactly why somebody can go half an hour without moving and catch nobody's eye. IRIS does not say what is wrong with that person: it says they have been motionless for longer than the hospital considers normal in that room at that hour, and it says it with the camera, the place and the elapsed time. With that, someone walks over and asks. Most of the time they will be asleep and nothing will have happened — and that is precisely the answer you want: that someone checked. The charge nurse does not want a system that is cleverer than her staff; she wants one that does not let half an hour pass in silence.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS know whether that person is asleep, faint or unconscious?
No, and it never will. A camera does not assess anyone's medical condition, and IRIS neither diagnoses nor predicts. All it detects is that a person has not moved for a while in a common area, and it says so in order for someone to go and look. If they are asleep, it ends there. If they are not, someone has seen it sooner than they otherwise would have. Which of the two it is, is decided by a clinician — always — looking at the person, not at a screen.
Is it stored who that person is?
No. IRIS does not identify anyone: it does not recognise faces, it does not compare them against any database, it does not store who anyone is and it does not access any medical record or any clinical data. To know that somebody has not moved for a while, all you need is a still shape in a seat — and that is all there is behind the alert.
How long is "a long while"?
Whatever the hospital decides. That number is written by the hospital with its own clinicians and it can be different in every room and every time slot: a waiting area mid-morning, with people coming and going, is not the same as a lobby at three in the morning. Set it too short and the alert fires constantly, and within a week nobody looks at it. That is why the setting belongs to the hospital and gets reviewed against what the team actually sees on shift.
