How the counting works

Counting is not something you ask for. You draw a line.

There are two lines drawn on the image, one for each direction of travel. Everything that crosses a line is added up, and what type it was is stored too: car, van, bus, motorbike or articulated lorry. Counting by direction is deliberate: mixing the two ways into a single figure makes the data useless for deciding anything. And a line cannot be asked for in words: it has to be drawn onto the frame, and that is why counting is set up by drawing.

What changes

What changes for whoever runs the road

The road's maintenance manager decides with two numbers: how many vehicles go past each day and what share of them are heavy. AADT — the year's total divided by 365 — says how much load the stretch carries, and the percentage of heavy vehicles says when resurfacing will be due, because an articulated lorry punishes the pavement far more than a car. Today that figure comes from a permanent counting station, which is expensive and therefore rare, or from a portable counter left in place for a few days and extrapolated to the rest of the year. The camera already on the pole counts every day, by direction and by vehicle type, and that engineer stops arguing about estimates and starts arguing about the whole series. The figures on this illustration are an example, not anyone's measurement.

What is AADT and why does it matter so much?

AADT is the Annual Average Daily Traffic: every vehicle that passes along a stretch in a year, divided by 365. It is the standard measure of a road's traffic load and the basis of almost every planning and maintenance decision: how many lanes are needed, when resurfacing is due, which junction has become too small. It is counted by direction, because a road with a heavy flow one way and a light one the other is not managed like a balanced one.

Why does the share of heavy vehicles matter so much?

Because it is not cars that wear out the pavement, it is lorries. A loaded articulated lorry punishes the surface far more than a car, so two stretches with the same AADT but a different share of heavy vehicles age at very different rates. That is why this percentage is the most consulted figure after AADT, and why IRIS counts by vehicle type and not just the total. The 14 % on the screen is an example from the illustration, not a measurement.

Does this replace a traffic counting station?

It does not replace an approved station where regulations require one. What it does is cover what is not measured today: the permanent station is expensive and therefore rare, and the portable counter is set up for a few days a year with the rest extrapolated. The camera is already installed and counts every day of the year, by direction and by type. And the way of counting is drawn once and stored, so March's figure is measured exactly like October's and the two can be compared.
