CAM-543

The escalator keeps feeding people into a blocked landing

Upper floor, between the escalator and the panoramic lift. There is a person on the ground and two people crouched down helping. Around them a ring of fourteen has closed and cut off the way through, right where the escalator drops people off. And the escalator does not stop: it keeps delivering fifty-two people a minute to a spot where nobody can move forward. Eighty centimetres of clear width are left.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • person on the ground
  • ring of people blocking the way
  • two people helping
  • the escalator still bringing people up
  • the panoramic lift
  • group coming along the walkway
  • the glass balustrade narrowing the way

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 48 sTime on the ground
  • 14People in the ring
  • 52 / minArriving by escalator
  • 0,8 mClear width
  • 17:12:04Video from

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

When an escalator landing runs out of clear width

Then

  1. alert security with the floor, the escalator and the live video
  2. ask for the escalator feeding that spot to be stopped
  3. save the video from the second the person went down
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if somebody has been on the ground for over thirty seconds, or if an escalator landing runs out of clear width.»

What changes

What changes for operations, for asset management and for security

Anybody can see the fall. What nobody sees from a control room with a hundred screens is that the landing has closed, and that is the urgent part: an escalator cannot stop itself at the top, and the people arriving behind cannot back out. With the alert, the security manager stops the escalator and clears the landing before the problem turns into a different and worse one.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS know what happened to that person?

No, and it does not claim to. IRIS states what can be seen: somebody is lying still where nobody lies down, has been like that for forty-eight seconds, and a ring of people has closed around them. Diagnosis is for the medical service. What IRIS changes is the clock: somebody knows at second forty-eight, not whenever a guard happens to walk past.

Why is the blocked landing more urgent than the fall?

Because the fall already has two people attending to it and the blocked landing has nobody. An escalator empties onto a fixed point and keeps delivering people even when that point is full: whoever reaches the top can neither go forward nor turn back. That is why the first action is not to attend the fall, which is already covered, but to stop the escalator.

Can IRIS stop the escalator on its own?

No. IRIS detects and alerts; stopping an escalator is decided by a person and carried out by the building’s own system. Detecting is not deciding. What IRIS puts on the table is the whole situation — who is on the ground, how much width is left and how many people keep arriving — so that the decision takes seconds instead of minutes.

Watch what happens. Then watch what IRIS does with it.

Not a recorded video and not a drawing: it is a summary of the real tool, with a different case each time round. The whole tool does not fit in a box.

  1. You draw the line
  2. It counts by itself
  3. A number comes out

And the best part

Video is late by definition:you watch it once the thing has already happened.

IRIS tells you while it is happening, with the camera, the time and what it saw. Arriving in time changes the end of almost any story, and no new cameras are needed for that.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
