Ticket gate stuck open

One of the gates in the line has been left with its leaves open while the ones beside it keep opening and closing with each ticket. People walk through the open one without validating.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • gate stuck open
  • line of ticket gates
  • passengers going through

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

one gate stays open while the ones beside it keep opening and closing

Duringmore than five minutes in a row

Then

  1. alert maintenance with the gate number and since when it has been like that
  2. alert the station supervisor, who decides whether to close it by hand
  3. count how many people went through while it was open
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if a gate stays open while the ones next to it are working, and how long it has been like that.»

What changes

What changes for whoever runs the station

Nobody reports an open gate: the passenger walking through it is not going to the desk to say so. It can stay like that for a whole afternoon, and it is not only the ticket that does not get sold: it is an open door in a station's line of control. Today the station supervisor finds out when he goes down to the concourse or when someone mentions it in passing. With IRIS the alert reaches him within five minutes, with the gate number, and maintenance goes straight to that one instead of checking the whole line.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS have to be connected to the ticketing system?

No. IRIS sees it through the camera: leaves that do not move while the ones beside them do, and people crossing in between. That has a big practical advantage: it works even when the gate itself is not reporting the fault, which is exactly what happens when it goes dumb instead of going down. If an integration with the ticketing system also exists, so much the better; it is not essential.

What about the wide gate that is deliberately left open?

You exclude it and that is that. Each gate is marked once on the image, saying which one is the accessible gate, which one is left open at rush hour and which one should never be. The rule applies only to the ones that were marked, so nobody has to put up with a daily alert about something that is done on purpose.

Does IRIS identify the people who go through without validating?

No. It counts how many people cross that gate while it is open, and nothing else: it does not know who they are, does not recognise faces and does not store who went through. That number is not there to fine anybody; it is there to show what it costs to leave a gate like that for an afternoon, and to justify fixing it fast.

Simulation · how IRIS works

No extra alarms here. Just what needs looking at.

Not a recorded video, not an explanatory drawing: a summary of the real screen, with a different case every time it starts. There is a lot more behind it.

  1. The alert fires
  2. You open it
  3. You confirm or dismiss

And the best part

What holds on camera oneholds on camera four thousand, with nothing to copy by hand.

A rule is stated once and applies everywhere. And it says the same thing on Sunday night as on Tuesday morning, whoever is on call.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
