How the counting works
Counting is not something you ask for. You draw a line.
Three lines are drawn on the image: one across the roadway, one across the cycle lane and one across the pavement. Anything that crosses a line is added up, and the direction of the line says whether it is coming or going. You cannot describe a line in a sentence: you have to draw it onto the frame. That is why counting is set up by drawing, and searching is done by talking.

What changes
What changes for whoever runs the city
The mobility engineer has to defend the cycle lane at a council meeting. Some say it is always full, others that it is empty, and both are speaking from memory: nobody has the number. With the three lines in place that engineer knows how many bicycles go past, at what times, how many ride outside the lane and how many cars still use the same stretch. With that he decides whether the lane needs widening, whether a signal should change or whether another bus is needed, and he defends it with the series in front of him. There is no incident here and nobody to alert: there is a figure that can be repeated next year and compared.
What people usually ask
Can I just tell IRIS 'count the cars' and be done?
No, asking IRIS to just count the cars is not enough, and it is worth knowing why. To find something, describing it is enough: 'show me yesterday's red motorbikes' is a sentence, and IRIS resolves it. To count, you have to say where the counting happens: a line across the roadway, with a direction, or an area painted on the image. That geometry is drawn once and stored; from then on the count is always the same, it repeats month after month and it can be audited. A number that changes with the wording is no basis for a decision.
Can a council rely on a count made with a camera?
A camera count is reliable when the line is well placed and the framing does not change, and that is exactly what is checked at commissioning. The geometry is stored, so the March figure is measured the same way as the October one. Where the count loses reliability is at night without enough street lighting, in heavy rain, or if the camera shifts: when a spot is in that condition, we say so before installing, not after.
Does IRIS tell a bicycle from an e-scooter?
IRIS tells a bicycle from an e-scooter and from a pedestrian, and each one is counted separately. The difference between a bicycle and a scooter is harder to see far away and in poor light, and there a few can end up in the wrong category. That is why the figure published is the hourly trend, which absorbs that margin, and not the exact number for one single minute.
