How the counting works
Counting is not something you ask for. You draw a line.
Counting is not asked for in words: it is drawn. There is a line across the way in from the promenade — whatever crosses it is added up — and four zones drawn over four different pieces of sand. Inside each zone IRIS counts how many people are there and divides that by the square metres of that piece: that is density. Neither the line nor the zones can be described in a sentence; they have to be drawn onto the frame, following the exact edge of each piece. That is why counting is set up by drawing, and searching is done by talking. And that is why the figure is repeatable and auditable: the line and the zones are always in the same place.

What changes
What changes for whoever runs the city
Capacity is how many people there are on the whole beach. Density is how many people there are per square metre in each piece of it, and they are not the same thing and are not good for the same thing. A beach can be at forty per cent of its capacity and still have its way in impassable, with people turning sideways to get between the towels. The capacity figure does not show that; the figure for each piece does. With the four zones drawn, whoever runs the beach knows where to put one more lifeguard, which of the two ways in to open and when it makes sense to say something over the loudspeakers — and can explain why to whoever asks. IRIS people counting is type-approved by the Spanish Metrology Centre: that the figure is the right one is guaranteed by an independent third party, not by us. That approval covers that measurement — people counting — and not the whole product.
What people usually ask
Isn't this the same as capacity?
No. Capacity is one number for the whole beach: how many people are inside. Density is how many people there are per square metre in each piece of sand. You can be well below capacity and still have one piece saturated, and that piece is where the problems come from: the way in that nobody can get through, the strip along the shoreline where there is no room for one more person. Capacity tells you whether the beach is full; density tells you where. To decide anything, you need the second one.
Does IRIS identify the people on the beach?
No. IRIS does not identify anyone: not the bathers, not the person lighting a fire, not the person riding a jet ski. It does not recognise faces, it does not compare them against any database and it does not store who anyone is. It counts people, and a counted person is a one: nothing else of them is kept. What comes out is a number per zone and per hour, not a record of anybody.
Who decides what the density limit is?
The beach service, not us. They set the limit that applies to each stretch and IRIS applies what it has been told: the line on the chart is that limit, not a recommendation of ours. What we do provide is the guarantee that the figure compared against it is the right one: IRIS people counting is type-approved by the Spanish Metrology Centre and it is an independent third party that verifies it. That approval covers people counting and nothing else.
